Like most of the babies in the ward, Ahamba had sepsis – a life-threatening reaction to infection. Many had been born outside of a hospital, and limited medical supplies put them at greater risk of getting an infection.
Ahamba was given meropenem, one of the strongest antibiotics available, because other drugs hadn’t worked. Babies often don’t survive the toll of the treatment.
